Zendaya is in talks to become the lead of Universal’s Bourne franchise, positioning the actor to take the helm of one of cinema’s most successful spy thriller series.
The move signals a significant shift for Zendaya, who has played supporting roles in major studio blockbusters including Spider-Man and Dune. Replacing Matt Damon, who originated the character of Jason Bourne in 2002, would represent her biggest starring role in a tent-pole franchise to date.
Zendaya currently stars in three major films hitting theaters next month. Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey release in July 2026. Later this year, she appears in Dune: Part Three alongside Timothée Chalamet, marking her third appearance in Denis Villeneuve’s epic science-fiction saga.
The Bourne franchise remains valuable intellectual property for Universal. The series generated $1.6 billion in global box office across the original trilogy, with later installments like The Bourne Legacy continuing to draw audiences.
Universal has explored ways to continue the franchise beyond Matt Damon’s tenure. Jeremy Renner starred in The Bourne Legacy in 2012, earning $161 million worldwide. A female-led reboot under Zendaya could tap into new audiences while maintaining franchise continuity.
Zendaya’s casting would represent a significant moment for female action leads in blockbuster cinema, following successful franchises like Wonder Woman and Black Widow.
Industry sources suggest negotiations are still in early stages, with no official announcement expected imminently.
