iPhone 17 Becomes World’s Best-Selling Smartphone in Q1 2026

By Mohammad Al AminJune 18, 20262 Mins Read

Apple’s iPhone 17 topped global smartphone sales charts in the first quarter of 2026, becoming the single best-selling handset worldwide according to research firm data covering the January to March period.

The iPhone 17 outsold its closest competitor by a margin that analysts attributed to strong demand in North America, Western Europe and India, where Apple has been expanding its retail footprint and financing options. The phone’s standard configuration led sales, with the Pro models contributing significantly to revenue even as the base model drove volume.

Apple’s performance pushed Samsung into second place for the quarter, reversing a pattern where Samsung’s Galaxy S series had led volume rankings in several previous quarters. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series sold well but could not match the combined pull of Apple’s brand, its services ecosystem and aggressive trade-in promotions that reduced the effective entry price for upgrades.

The iPhone 17 launched in September 2025 with Apple’s A19 chip, a redesigned camera module and, for the Pro versions, a thinner chassis that drew comparisons to the MacBook Air form factor. The base model was priced starting at $799 with the standard configuration. Early reviews noted improved thermal performance compared to the iPhone 16 series, which had faced criticism over heat management during sustained tasks.

The Q1 result matters for Apple because it is traditionally a softer quarter for iPhone sales following the holiday peak. A number-one position in Q1 suggests the iPhone 17’s demand curve held through the post-holiday period better than expected. Apple has confirmed the foldable iPhone for September 2026, which will compete in a segment where Samsung and other manufacturers have been the only major players.

The smartphone market is also being shaped by AI feature adoption. Google’s Android 17 update brought new on-device AI capabilities to Pixel devices, and Microsoft‘s 10 billion dollar Japan AI investment signals where tech spending is going. Apple Intelligence features embedded in iOS 19 contributed to the iPhone 17’s appeal among buyers who upgraded specifically for AI functionality. IDC and Counterpoint Research both published Q1 2026 data confirming the ranking — the IDC report provides the full breakdown by model and region.

Apple’s lead could narrow in Q2 as Samsung prepares a mid-year refresh and Chinese manufacturers push aggressively in Southeast Asia. But a Q1 global sales leadership position is a result Apple will use in every marketing message for the rest of the year.
