The US Food and Drug Administration has elevated a voluntary recall of commercially distributed Alfredo sauce to its most serious Class I classification, meaning there is a reasonable probability that consuming the affected product could cause serious illness or death due to potential Salmonella contamination.
The recall was initiated by Tennessee-based The Coffee Connexion Co. Inc. on May 6. The company pulled the product after a dry milk powder ingredient used in the sauce was recalled by its supplier over potential Salmonella contamination. The FDA‘s Class I upgrade — its highest risk designation — followed a health hazard evaluation that confirmed the contamination risk warranted the most urgent level of consumer alert.
The recalled product is a commercial Alfredo sauce packaged in 3-pound, 7-ounce sealed poly bags, 12 bags per case, carrying UPC 0039954921963. Affected batch numbers include 046188 through 046193, 047290 through 047296, 048029 through 048034 and 049089 through 049094. Best-by dates on affected product range from January 2028 to April 2028. The sauce was distributed to food service customers across 41 states. Retail consumers are less likely to have purchased the product directly, but anyone who sourced it through a food service supplier should not use it and should discard or return it.
Salmonella infections cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps that typically last four to seven days. Most people recover without treatment, but infants, elderly people and those with compromised immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness requiring hospitalization. The FDA has not reported any confirmed illnesses linked to this specific product as of the recall announcement.
The recall is part of a broader chain reaction from a powdered milk supplier contamination event that has affected multiple products.
