Anduril and Archer Aviation announced a partnership to develop autonomous aircraft platforms for commercial and military use. The collaboration pairs Anduril’s autonomy and defense systems expertise with Archer’s electric aviation engineering. The first vehicle is called Thunder, an autonomous attack rotorcraft.

This is serious defense tech. An autonomous rotorcraft that flies itself and carries weapons is not hypothetical anymore. It’s being engineered by two companies with funding, leadership, and a roadmap to deployment.
What Thunder Does
Thunder operates without a pilot. It navigates autonomously, identifies targets, executes commands. Anduril’s software stack handles decision-making. Archer’s aircraft platform handles flight. Together they solve the full problem: perception, planning, execution.
Military and Commercial Split
The partnership targets both markets. Military applications are obvious. Commercial applications are murkier but profitable. Package delivery, infrastructure inspection, border patrol. Any task where flying autonomous means cheaper operations.
The Defense AI Boom
July 2026 saw over $3 billion invested in military AI. Shield AI raised $1.5 billion. Helsing’s European round closed at 1.8 billion euros. The money is flowing because militaries see autonomy as existential. Countries that deploy autonomous systems first gain advantage. That creates urgency and funding.
Thunder is one of several autonomous military platforms in development. The race is on, and Anduril-Archer are moving fast.
