Apple is preparing a new high-end MacBook Ultra with an OLED display and touchscreen, designed to sit above the MacBook Pro in the lineup. The machine is “on track” to launch between late 2026 and early 2027, though sources now lean toward the later window.

The delay reflects a global memory chip shortage affecting the tech industry. But for Apple, it means extra time to refine what will be its first Mac with a touchscreen and OLED panel—both significant firsts for the Mac line.
What Makes MacBook Ultra Different
The MacBook Ultra represents Apple’s pivot toward premium, feature-rich laptops for users who demand the highest performance. The 14-inch and 16-inch models will use new M-series chips, likely the M7, with substantially more memory than current Pro models.
The OLED display is the real story. Apple has mastered OLED on iPhone and iPad Pro. Bringing that technology to Mac means deeper blacks, faster refresh rates, and better battery efficiency—traits that matter on a laptop screen that’s always on.
The touchscreen is equally significant. Professional Mac users have debated this for years. Apple resisted because desktop workflows differ from tablets and phones. But for video editing, design, and content creation, a touch surface could matter more than skeptics admit.
Timing and Memory Constraints
The memory chip shortage is real. SK Hynix and Samsung are struggling to keep up with demand from AI infrastructure spending, which means consumer devices are deprioritized. Apple can wait. Its users will.
By early 2027, supply should ease. Apple gets better components. Buyers get a machine that reflects Apple’s real ambition for the Mac, not a compromise born from shortage.
The MacBook Ultra will test whether Apple users actually want to touch a laptop screen—and whether the company can finally make a Mac that feels more than incremental.
