ChatGPT Ads reaches $1 billion run rate as self-serve access expands

By Tusher DebnathSeptember 1, 20262 Mins Read

ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in less than 200 days, according to OpenAI, as the company expands self-serve advertising access beyond its initial markets. OpenAI said tens of thousands of advertisers use the platform and that direct buying is expanding across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

A run rate is a snapshot of current revenue multiplied across a year, not a statement that the company has already collected $1 billion in annual sales. Axios reported the milestone and noted why advertising matters to a generative-AI business carrying substantial infrastructure costs. The distinction is important for readers comparing a fast-growing indicator with booked or audited revenue.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are clearly labelled and kept separate from answers, and that advertisers do not receive access to private conversations. The company also says users can control personalisation. Those are OpenAI’s product principles and claims; independent testing and continued user experience will determine how consistently the separation works across countries, account types and future ad formats.

The self-serve expansion changes the audience for the product. A managed sales model mainly serves large advertisers, while an Ads Manager lets smaller businesses set up campaigns, choose targeting and measure outcomes. OpenAI says more than 50 technology and measurement partners are involved, and that product feeds, geographic targeting and conversion tools are part of the platform’s direction.

The commercial model also raises a familiar trust question: a conversational interface can make discovery feel more personal than a search-results page. OpenAI says advertising does not influence answers, but users will still want a visible boundary between sponsored information and generated guidance. Advertisers and publishers should watch disclosure language, controls and measurement rather than assuming that a new placement behaves like a traditional banner.

The immediate story is the scale claim and the global rollout, not a guarantee of future growth. OpenAI’s official announcement and Axios independently report the $1 billion run rate and market expansion. The next evidence will be revenue reporting, advertiser retention and user research showing whether labelled ads can grow without undermining confidence in the answers around them.
