Commonwealth Games Glasgow Opens: King Charles Emerges From Tardis

By Rithe RoseJuly 25, 20262 Mins Read

The Commonwealth Games opened Thursday in Glasgow inside an indoor arena for the first time in the event’s history. King Charles emerged from Doctor Who’s Tardis to kick things off. Over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations filed in to roaring crowd noise inside the Hydro. The opening felt intimate despite the scale — most Commonwealth Games openings happen in stadiums.

Athletes continue competing through August 2. This is a ten-day event that will spread across Glasgow with more than 3,000 competitors chasing 215 gold medals. The hosting city is betting on the games to boost tourism and show that Scotland can run a major international event smoothly. Early signs suggest they’re pulling it off.

The Opening Moment

Fiona Bruce opened the ceremony at 20:00 on Thursday. She got straight to business. The Tardis moment landed as a playful tease — the King waving from inside the blue box was exactly the kind of light touch the opening needed. Chris Hoy, the six-time track cycling Olympic champion, stepped out with the monarch. The crowd erupted.

Scottish performers followed. Tom Walker, KT Tunstall, and Nina Nesbitt took the stage. The music was good enough to keep people interested without overshadowing the athletes.

First Medal Days

Competition started Friday morning. Friday and Saturday saw medal events across swimming, powerlifting, gymnastics, para sports, and lawn bowls. England and Australia came in with strong squads. India brought powerlifters and boxers. Scotland, hosting, will look to medal at home — always easier than traveling.

Day 2 results are still being finalized, but medal counts are starting to shape up. The medal tracker shows what everyone expected: Commonwealth powerhouses Australia, England, and Canada stacking up early golds.

Why This Venue Matters

Using an indoor arena was a risk. Indoor events often feel disconnected from the spectacle of outdoor stadiums. But Glasgow’s Hydro worked. Thirteen thousand people packed the seats. The sound was better. The energy was tighter. If other host cities are watching, they’ll see that indoor openings can actually work better than massive outdoor shows.

Glasgow’s quiet confidence in this games — the indoor arena, the scaled-down production — is paying off so far.
