Disney and TikTok strike global deal letting creators use Marvel and Star Wars characters

By Tarek HasanAugust 6, 20262 Mins Read

The Walt Disney Company and TikTok announced a first-of-its-kind global short-form content-sharing deal this week, giving social media creators access to characters and scenes from Disney franchises including Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars to build into their own videos.

Under the agreement, creators on TikTok will get access to memorable scenes and moments from Disney movies and shows, which they can incorporate into short-form content. The same library of clips will also feed Vert, a vertical video feed built into the Disney+ streaming app, creating a two-way flow of content between the two platforms.

Disney and TikTok plan to roll out a pilot version of the program in the coming months before expanding it to additional markets. As part of the partnership, the two companies are also launching a jointly run Disney Creator Ambassador Program, which will give top-performing creators access to special rewards, exclusive events and career development opportunities tied to Disney properties.

The deal is one of the most significant moves so far under Disney’s new chief executive, Josh D’Amaro, who has been looking for ways to make Disney+ stickier by adding more social, creator-driven content alongside the platform’s traditional film and television library. Disney leadership has said that folding short-form video into Disney+ is intended to create what the company calls a more complete experience, with the goal of keeping subscribers engaged and on the app for longer sessions.

The partnership also gives TikTok a high-profile content source at a time when the platform continues to face scrutiny over its ownership structure in the United States. For Disney, tapping into TikTok’s massive creator base offers a way to extend the reach of its characters beyond its own apps and into the feeds where younger audiences already spend much of their time.

The partnership adds to a growing list of ways major entertainment companies are experimenting with social-first formats to extend the reach of established franchises beyond traditional streaming and box office releases.
