“House of the Dragon” wrapped its third season this weekend, closing out one of HBO’s biggest fantasy runs since Game of Thrones ended in 2019. The show has already been renewed for a fourth season, which HBO confirmed during its programming slate presentation late last year. Season 3 has averaged more than 33 million global viewers per episode, with the finale airing Sunday, August 9.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced the season 4 renewal in November 2025, months before season 3 even premiered. The confirmation came as a relief to fans worried the Targaryen civil war story would be cut short after uneven reviews for parts of season 2.
Season 4 is not expected to arrive until 2028, a gap of roughly two years between seasons that has become standard for HBO’s biggest prestige dramas. Showrunner Ryan Condal has said in interviews that he sees the fourth season as a likely endpoint for the series, though HBO has stopped short of calling it official.
Asked directly whether House of the Dragon will end with season 4, Bloys gave reporters a cautious answer. He said HBO generally lets show creators decide when a story feels finished, and that no final call has been made yet.
The series follows the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, adapted from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. Season 3 pushed the war into its bloodiest stretch yet, with several major character deaths and the political map of Westeros shifting hard toward chaos.
Casting for season 4 has not been announced. Production timelines for HBO’s dragon-scale shows typically run 12 to 18 months, which lines up with a 2028 premiere if filming starts sometime next year.
For now, fans are left with a long wait and a finished season to rewatch. HBO has not released a trailer, teaser, or any footage from the next chapter. Global audiences will have a long wait to see how the Targaryen war finally resolves.
