iOS 27 reshapes the iPhone interface around the Duo’s two displays

By Soniya ChowdhurySeptember 11, 20262 Mins Read

Apple is rebuilding parts of iOS 27 around the way the iPhone Duo opens, closes and changes angle. The software changes are more than a stretched version of the standard iPhone interface. Apple’s announcement and MacRumors’ report show a system that moves controls and navigation to suit the larger inner screen and the compact outer screen.

When the Duo is open, iOS 27 can show two Home Screen pages. The Dock, Lock Screen controls and other navigation elements move along the side rather than taking space at the bottom. That leaves more vertical room for an app while keeping common controls within reach.

The interface also responds to the phone’s position. Apple says the software can reorient when the device is turned on its side and switch to the appropriate display when the phone is flipped. The behavior is designed for a product that is not always used in one fixed shape.

MacRumors reports that Apple has built new APIs for developers who need their apps to respond to the Duo’s changing layout. The report also says support for the new design is coming to Device Hub in Xcode. That gives developers a place to test how an app behaves as the phone folds and unfolds.

Apple’s own examples include a vertical Dock, a status bar that fits into a corner and a Dynamic Island that runs vertically on the outer display. Those are visible changes, but the larger issue is consistency. Apps must handle more than two screen sizes; they must also handle transitions between tApple’s iOS 27hem.

The iPhone Duo is scheduled to accept preorders on October 16, with availability beginning October 23, according to Apple. Until the phone reaches customers, app support will depend on how quickly developers adopt the new APIs and test their layouts across the Duo’s positions.

This is a software story rather than a claim about a new processor or camera. Apple is using iOS 27 to make the foldable form understandable to existing iPhone users, while giving developers a defined way to adapt their work for a moving display.
