The iPhone 18 Pro Max is shaping up to be Apple’s most camera-focused smartphone yet. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported earlier this year that the main rear camera on both iPhone 18 Pro models will feature a variable aperture mechanism — a first for any iPhone — and multiple sources have since corroborated the detail.

Variable aperture allows the camera lens to mechanically adjust how much light passes through the sensor, similar to how a DSLR or mirrorless camera operates. On the iPhone 18 Pro Max, this would mean the main 48-megapixel Fusion lens can shoot at different aperture values depending on lighting conditions, rather than relying on a fixed f/1.78 opening. Apple has not confirmed the feature, but PhoneArena and Macworld both cite active production of the component as of mid-2026.
MacRumors, citing analyst Jeff Pu, also reports that Apple has a four-part camera upgrade plan beginning with the iPhone 18 Pro. Beyond variable aperture, the plan reportedly includes a new periscope telephoto with improved zoom range and upgraded ultrawide sensors. Whether all four upgrades ship in this generation or are staggered across future models has not been confirmed.
Battery capacity for the Pro Max is expected to jump substantially. Leaks cited by Gulf News and analytical reports put the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 5,100 to 5,200 mAh in eSIM-only markets — Apple’s largest battery ever in a smartphone. The iPhone 17 Pro Max carried a 4,685 mAh cell. The increase, combined with the A20 chip’s improved efficiency, is expected to push endurance into multi-day territory for moderate users.
The display will reportedly switch from the current LTPO technology to LTPO Plus, a panel standard that offers more granular refresh rate control and lower idle power draw. The 6.9-inch screen size is expected to remain unchanged from the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Under-display Face ID, shared with the standard Pro model, will allow a pinhole front camera cutout that replaces the Dynamic Island pill shape.
Apple is expected to announce the full iPhone 18 lineup in the second week of September 2026, with pre-orders opening shortly after. The foldable iPhone is expected at the same event. Samsung’s Z Fold 8 arrives in July and will set the competitive benchmark before Apple responds. The iPhone 17 was the world’s best-selling smartphone in Q1 2026, giving Apple strong market momentum heading into the launch.
All specifications remain unconfirmed until Apple’s official announcement. Variable aperture in particular is a mechanically complex feature, and supply chain plans can change close to production. The Pro Max color lineup — Dark Cherry, Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver — follows the same four options expected for the standard Pro model. MacRumors published a full feature-by-feature breakdown of the latest rumour status as of June 15, 2026.
