Apple’s iPhone Duo includes a camera feature called Smart Take that uses on-device artificial intelligence to decide when a group photo is ready. Apple says models running on the A20 Pro analyze the scene in real time and capture the image when the subjects are posing. MacRumors also describes the feature as a way to avoid setting a timer and running back into frame.

The feature addresses a familiar problem. A person can set up a phone, start a timer and still miss the moment while moving into position. Smart Take is designed to follow that setup and wait for the group to be ready instead of using only a fixed countdown.
Apple describes the processing as on-device. That matters because the feature is presented as a camera function powered by the A20 Pro’s Neural Engine, not as a request sent to a remote chatbot. The company has not published a full technical account of how the system identifies a pose or how many people it can recognize.
MacRumors’ coverage places Smart Take alongside other Duo camera tools. The outer display can show the live preview so subjects can check framing, while Kid Cue can play Peanuts animations to draw a child’s attention. Those tools use the foldable design, but Smart Take is the part that uses scene analysis to trigger the capture.
Apple also says the Duo can take rear-camera selfies and use Duo FaceTime across the two displays. Smart Take should not be confused with an automatic photo editor or a promise that every frame will be perfect. It is a capture-timing feature, and the final image still depends on the camera, light and people in the scene.
The iPhone Duo is scheduled to open for preorders on October 16 and reach customers on October 23. Apple says the model starts at $1,999. Independent testing will show how reliably Smart Take recognizes a ready group, how quickly it responds and whether users can disable it when they want a normal shutter workflow.
For now, the verified claim is limited to Apple’s stated design: A20 Pro on-device models can analyze a scene and automatically take a group photo when the subjects are posing. No broader accuracy or privacy claim is supported by the launch materials.
