The debate surrounding Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid continues to attract attention across Spanish football, with persistent links connecting the Argentine forward to Barcelona despite the significant obstacles that would stand in the way of any potential transfer.

As speculation around Alvarez remains a regular topic of discussion, former Atletico striker Diego Forlan has offered a perspective shaped by his own experience as both a player and a figure closely associated with the Madrid club.

Speaking to Cope, as reported by Mundo Deportivo, Forlan addressed the growing conversation about Alvarez and stressed the importance of respecting the decisions that professional footballers make regarding their careers.
Alvarez has established himself as one of Atletico Madrid’s most important players and one of the most highly regarded forwards in European football. His performances have naturally attracted interest and fuelled ongoing reports linking him with some of the continent’s leading clubs, including Barcelona.
Asked about the possibility of the Argentina international leaving Atletico, Forlan avoided taking a definitive position on whether a transfer should happen. Instead, he focused on the broader realities that often shape major moves in modern football.
“You have to respect everyone’s decision,” Forlan said when discussing the player’s future.
The former Uruguay international also acknowledged the financial dimension that accompanies transfers involving elite players. He noted that if Alvarez were to leave, any deal would likely involve a substantial fee and could ultimately benefit both the player and the club.
“If he has to go, if he wants to go, let it be for a good sum, which it surely will be,” Forlan said, describing such an outcome as “a win-win situation for both sides.”
At the same time, he underlined the importance of protecting Atletico Madrid’s interests. Forlan argued that no individual, regardless of status or popularity, can be placed above the institution itself.
“As I always say, the Uruguayan national team, Spain, Madrid, Barcelona – the clubs come before any player and any individual,” he said.
Expanding on that point, Forlan noted that Atletico has seen many influential forwards pass through its ranks over the years while continuing to develop as a club.
“Another will come along. Great strikers have come before who have made history at Atletico de Madrid, and the club continues to grow,” he added.
Forlan’s comments reflected an understanding of the competing emotions that often emerge when transfer rumours involve key players. Having experienced similar situations during his own career, he recognised both the concerns of supporters and the professional considerations faced by footballers.
“I’m a strong advocate for professional players, because I’ve experienced it first-hand,” he said. “I understand that, for the fans, it might seem like a betrayal when a player wants to leave.”
Rather than choosing one side of the debate, Forlan suggested that both perspectives deserve recognition.
“It’s not that I’m trying to please both sides, but I fully understand the club’s position and I fully understand the player’s position.”

For now, Alvarez remains at the centre of transfer discussion, while Atletico Madrid and Barcelona continue to be linked through reports that have yet to move beyond speculation. Forlan’s remarks offer a reminder that, regardless of the outcome, such situations are rarely as straightforward as they appear from the outside.
