Motorola has quietly shifted the tone of its G-series with the unveiling of the Moto G87, a device that places unusual emphasis on camera hardware for a lineup long associated with affordability and everyday use. The phone arrives alongside a broader slate of releases, including new foldables, but it is the G87 that signals a subtle change in priorities.

At the centre of that shift is a 200-megapixel primary camera, paired with optical image stabilisation and support for 2x lossless zoom. Motorola is positioning this sensor as the headline feature, backed by what it calls “Ultra Pixel” technology, which it says improves light sensitivity and overall image clarity. The company claims up to 16 times better light capture, though real-world results will ultimately determine how far those gains translate into everyday photography.
The camera system also introduces multiple focal length options, allowing users to frame shots at 24mm, 35mm, or 50mm. An 8-megapixel ultra-wide lens sits alongside the main sensor, while a 32-megapixel front camera handles selfies. Additional software features, including an AI-based Auto Smile Capture mode, round out a setup clearly aimed at social media users and casual photographers.
Beyond imaging, the G87 stays within familiar mid-range territory. It features a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Peak brightness is rated at 5,000 nits, and the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i. Power comes from the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chipset, paired with up to 12GB of RAM, a combination that should handle routine tasks without difficulty.
Battery capacity stands at 5,200mAh with 30W wired charging. While sufficient for most users, it sits below some newer devices that have begun pushing larger batteries and faster charging speeds.
Durability appears to be another area of attention. The phone carries IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, alongside MIL-STD-810H certification. Motorola says the device can withstand drops from up to 1.2 metres, suggesting a design intended for more than careful indoor use.
The G87 runs Android 16 out of the box and includes dual speakers, which the company claims deliver significantly stronger output than its predecessor.
Motorola has not yet disclosed pricing, though the device is set to roll out across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America in the coming weeks. There is no confirmation on availability in India at this stage.

For now, the Moto G87 stands as a sign that Motorola is testing how far it can push its budget-oriented series, particularly in areas where it has traditionally played it safe. Whether that approach resonates will depend less on specifications and more on how the phone performs once it reaches users’ hands.
