Xiaomi has begun rolling out its Android 17 developer preview to a limited set of flagship smartphones, offering an early look at the next version of the mobile operating system for developers and technically inclined users.

The preview is currently available in select global markets for devices including the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, its Leica Edition variant, the Xiaomi 17, and the Xiaomi 15T Pro. Access is not automatic. Users must enrol through the companyâs official beta programme and meet specific system requirements before proceeding.
For those eligible, installation requires a more hands-on approach than a standard update. Xiaomi has outlined a manual process that involves downloading a ROM package, transferring it to the device, and initiating installation through system settings. The company has made clear that the preview will not be delivered broadly as an over-the-air update at this stage.
The process comes with trade-offs. Installing the developer preview will wipe all existing data on the device, a step Xiaomi has highlighted prominently in its guidance. Users are expected to back up their data beforehand. Even then, the company cautions that the software remains an early test build, with potential bugs, performance inconsistencies, and general instability.
That warning reflects the intended audience. The preview is aimed primarily at developers who need to test applications against the upcoming Android APIs and assess how their software behaves under the new system environment. For everyday users, particularly those relying on their devices for routine tasks, Xiaomi advises against installing the build.
The rollout places Xiaomi within the broader Android testing cycle that has already seen Google release beta versions of Android 17 for its Pixel lineup earlier in the year. Other manufacturers have followed with their own early-access programmes, each adapting the base software to their ecosystems.
A stable release of Android 17 is expected later in 2026, following multiple rounds of testing and refinement. For now, Xiaomiâs developer preview offers a controlled environment for early experimentation, rather than a finished product ready for widespread use.
