NASA has selected 18 early-stage technology concepts for its 2026 Innovative Advanced Concepts programme, including a proposal to send about 10,000 tiny satellites to study Saturn’s rings and surrounding environment. NASA 18 futuristic spaceflight ideas is the search phrase for the award list.

NASA said the Phase I awards total $3.2 million, with each selected project receiving up to $175,000 for a nine-month feasibility study. The agency stressed that the projects are concepts under investigation and are not official NASA missions.
The Saturn proposal, led by Michael Rubenstein of Northwestern University, would use actively steerable femtosats weighing less than 100 grams to map the composition and density of the rings, the atmosphere and the magnetosphere.
Other selected concepts include systems for exploring lunar lava tubes, technologies for operating in Venus’s harsh atmosphere, spacecraft ideas for studying exoplanets and approaches to monitoring space debris and solar radiation.
The NASA award is funding research into whether the concepts can work, not promising a launch. Each team must examine technical challenges, develop its design and identify what would be required for later phases or a possible future mission.
The Saturn femtosat idea is therefore best understood as a research proposal with a large planned swarm, rather than a confirmed spacecraft programme. NASA’s official award list provides the current details, while future selections would be needed before any of the concepts could move toward flight hardware.
