Christopher Nolan The Odyssey Shatters Box Office Record With 258M Global Opening

By Sadia Afrin JoyaJuly 20, 20262 Mins Read

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has shattered every expectation. The film opened to 257.8 million dollars worldwide, the best opening ever for a Nolan film and proof that audiences still show up for ambitious, expensive cinema when the director earns their trust.

Domestically, the epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem earned 124.5 million dollars from 3,919 theaters in the United States. Internationally, it collected 139.6 million dollars across 73 markets. These numbers arrive before the film had even been in theaters a week. It’s not just a hit. It’s the kind of hit that changes studio strategy for the rest of the year.

What the Critics Say

The Odyssey holds a 95 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from 363 reviews, with an average rating of 8.7 out of 10. That’s real critical consensus, not just hype. Nolan’s direction, the performances from Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, the sets, the scale—they all landed.

The film cost money. Massive productions always do. But the opening weekend itself has already justified the investment. By the time it reaches 500 million dollars globally, and it will, studios will be ordering more ambitious projects from proven directors.

What This Means for Summer Box Office

This opening also matters because it comes in a competitive summer. Minions & Monsters opened two weeks ago to a franchise low. The Odyssey shows that if you give audiences a genuine event film with real artistry, they’ll spend the money. They’ll drive across town. They’ll skip streaming.

Nolan has never made a film audiences didn’t want to see. But this opening tells you something else: they want to see this one twice.

The Odyssey expands tomorrow and over the next two weeks will define the rest of summer 2026.
