Ricky Gervais is returning to Netflix on August 7 with “Alley Cats,” a new adult animated sitcom he created, stars in and directs, marking his first major series for the platform since “After Life.”

The show follows a group of feral British cats “from all walks of society” as they seek companionship while navigating the trials and absurdities of everyday life, according to Netflix‘s official synopsis. The first season contains six episodes.

Gervais voices the lead character, Gus, alongside a cast built largely from his regular collaborators. Diane Morgan voices Olive, David Earl voices Puke, Jo Hartley voices Kitten, Tom Basden voices Ponce and Andrew Brooke voices Fang. Kerry Godliman, Natalie Cassidy and Tony Way round out the voice cast in supporting roles.

Gervais directs the series alongside co-director Elliot Dear, an animator known for his mixed-media style. The animation is produced by Blink Industries, the BAFTA-nominated London studio behind “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” and Netflix‘s “Dead End: Paranormal Park,” with Tang Heng serving as production designer. Gervais and Steven Hamilton Shaw are executive producers.

“Alley Cats” extends Gervais’ long relationship with Netflix, which has been the exclusive home of “After Life” as well as several of his stand-up comedy specials. Netflix first previewed the series at the Annecy International Film Festival in France in late June, screening two episodes ahead of the global release. The series arrives the same week as several other Netflix originals, positioning it as one of the streamer’s higher-profile animated launches of the summer.

The synopsis promises Gervais’ “signature style of heart and social commentary,” blending humor with poignancy in a style similar to After Life and his earlier series Derek, both of which paired comedic bite with emotional depth. Elliot Dear, the series’ co-director, is known for a distinctive mixed-media animation style developed across several acclaimed short films before joining the Alley Cats production.
