Fresh reports circulating ahead of Sony’s expected May 13 announcement are fueling discussion about what could become a significant shift in the company’s approach to high-resolution mirrorless cameras.

According to claims currently being shared within the photography community, the rumored Sony A7RVI may combine extremely high resolution with performance characteristics that have traditionally been associated with Sony’s fastest professional camera bodies.
At the center of the speculation is a reported fully stacked image sensor carrying approximately 67 megapixels. If accurate, the move would be notable within Sony’s Alpha lineup. Stacked sensor technology has generally been reserved for models built around speed, rapid data processing and fast readout performance, including cameras positioned toward professional sports and action photography.
The A7R series has historically occupied a different role. Previous models have focused primarily on delivering maximum image detail for applications such as landscape photography, studio work and commercial production. The latest claims suggest Sony could be seeking to reduce the long-standing distinction between resolution-focused cameras and high-speed professional systems.
Information accompanying the reports points to performance that may approach the capabilities of the A1 II in several areas. Continuous shooting performance, video features and autofocus systems are all cited among the expected upgrades. The rumored camera is also said to incorporate newer AI-assisted technologies and in-body image stabilization systems reportedly introduced in the Sony A7 V.
While none of the specifications have been confirmed by Sony, the reported feature set has drawn attention because it would place the A7RVI in a more ambitious position within the company’s lineup than previous generations of the series.
Pricing rumors appear to reflect that positioning.
Current claims suggest a launch price of roughly $5,000 in the United States and more than €5,000 across European markets. That would place the camera above the current A7R V, which is reportedly selling near €4,000 after launching in 2022 at €4,500. Even so, the rumored price would remain well below the A1 II, which is cited at approximately €7,500.
Reports have also pointed to a new telephoto lens expected to be announced alongside the camera. The lens is described as a 100-400mm f/4.5 GM model and is not currently being presented as a direct replacement for the existing FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS.
That interpretation stems largely from claims that the new lens will not carry a GM II designation. Instead, the rumored design is said to feature an internal zoom mechanism, a constant f/4.5 aperture and a lightweight construction. Reports accompanying the claims also reference high-end optical performance, although no technical testing, image samples or supporting measurements have been made available.
The lens is expected to carry a price similar to that of the camera body, placing it near the $5,000 range and slightly above €5,000 in Europe.
