Fresh claims circulating ahead of Sony’s expected May 13 announcement suggest the company may be preparing a notable change in direction for its high-resolution Alpha series, with the rumored Sony A7RVI combining extreme resolution with performance levels typically associated with Sony’s flagship professional cameras.

According to the information currently circulating, the camera is expected to feature a roughly 67-megapixel fully stacked image sensor. Within Sony’s existing Alpha lineup, stacked sensor technology has generally been reserved for models designed around speed and rapid data readout, including the A1 II and A9 II.

If the reported specifications prove accurate, the A7RVI would move beyond the traditional role occupied by Sony’s A7R series, which has historically focused on maximizing image detail for landscape, studio and commercial photography. The latest claims instead suggest a camera intended to narrow the long-standing divide between resolution-focused bodies and faster all-around professional systems.

The reported feature set points to performance that could approach the A1 II in several key areas, including continuous shooting capabilities and video functions. The camera is also said to incorporate newer autofocus technologies, AI-assisted features and in-body image stabilization systems that reportedly appeared in the Sony A7 V.

Pricing appears to reflect that more ambitious positioning.

The rumored launch price places the A7RVI at approximately $5,000 in the United States and above €5,000 across European markets. That would represent a noticeable increase over the current A7R V, which is reportedly selling near €4,000 after debuting in 2022 at €4,500.

Even at that level, however, the rumored pricing would still leave a significant gap below the A1 II, which is cited at roughly €7,500.

Alongside the camera body, Sony is also rumored to be preparing a new 100-400mm f/4.5 GM telephoto lens.

Information accompanying the claims suggests the lens is not being presented as a direct successor to the existing FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS. That interpretation is largely based on reports that the lens will not carry a “GM II” designation.

Instead, the rumored lens is said to take a different approach. Reported features include an internal zoom design, a constant f/4.5 aperture and a lightweight construction. The information also points to high-end optical performance, although no technical measurements, image samples or supporting data have been provided.

Its expected price is said to be similar to that of the camera body, placing it near the $5,000 mark and slightly above €5,000 in Europe.

For photographers following developments in the high-end mirrorless market, the central question will likely be whether Sony can successfully bring together very high resolution and flagship-level responsiveness within a single camera body. For now, those details remain unconfirmed, with attention focused on whether the company’s expected announcement will match the specifications currently being reported.
