Tesla Faces NHTSA Investigation into Suspension Failures on 1.2M Vehicles

By Soniya ChowdhuryAugust 1, 20262 Mins Read

US auto safety regulators opened a preliminary investigation into Tesla suspension failures affecting approximately 1.2 million vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is examining potential defects in the suspension system.

Tesla suspension investigation recall

Tesla has not disclosed whether the suspension issues have caused accidents or injuries. The investigation marks NHTSA’s latest scrutiny of the electric vehicle manufacturer following previous probes into Autopilot and battery safety.

What Triggered the Investigation

The investigation came after reports of suspension problems from vehicle owners. NHTSA’s preliminary investigation stage typically examines whether a defect exists and how widespread it might be before determining next steps.

The scope covers multiple Tesla models and production years. NHTSA has the authority to demand recalls if it finds evidence of safety-defect patterns.

Implications for Tesla

A major recall would add to Tesla’s operational costs and could damage consumer confidence at a critical time. The company is simultaneously dealing with other regulatory pressures and expanding its Robotaxi fleet in Florida.

The investigation also comes as competitors ramp up EV production, putting pressure on Tesla’s market share and manufacturing efficiency.

The preliminary investigation will determine whether Tesla’s suspension issues warrant a formal safety recall or pattern investigation.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

What is a preliminary investigation by NHTSA?

It’s the initial phase where regulators assess whether a potential safety defect exists. If evidence supports a defect, NHTSA can escalate to an Engineering Analysis before determining whether a recall is warranted.
