The rugged smartphone segment has long occupied a niche corner of the mobile market, serving users who prioritize endurance and specialized features over slim designs. With the introduction of the 8849 Tank 5, the company is extending that approach with a device that combines an oversized battery, projector functionality, and flagship-level hardware in a notably large form factor.

Scheduled to launch on June 10, the 8849 Tank 5 arrives as the latest addition to the company’s Tank series of outdoor-focused smartphones. The new model builds on features introduced earlier this year with the Tank X, including a built-in DLP projector rated at 220 lumens with 1080p resolution and laser autofocus.

The projector remains one of the phone’s defining features. Unlike earlier models in the lineup that offered lower brightness levels, the Tank 5 carries forward the more capable projection system while adding upgraded internal hardware and display technology.

At the front of the device is a 6.73-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 3200 x 1440 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel is rated for up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness, placing it among the most prominent specifications on the device.

Powering the smartphone is MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400e processor, paired with up to 18GB of LPDDR5X memory and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. Those specifications position the Tank 5 as a significant hardware upgrade within the series.

Battery capacity remains a central part of the device’s identity. The phone includes a 17,600mAh battery, matching the capacity found in the Tank X. The large power reserve is intended to support extended use over multiple days, though projector operation is likely to place greater demands on the battery.

Charging support includes 120W fast charging as well as 25W reverse charging. The latter allows the smartphone to function as a power source for other compatible devices.

Durability remains a key focus. The Tank 5 carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, although that protection comes with considerable size and weight. The device measures 177.1 x 87 x 33.8 millimeters and weighs 715 grams, making it substantially larger and heavier than conventional smartphones.

The camera system includes a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 50-megapixel night vision camera, and a 32-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone also supports DisplayPort 1.4 video output through its USB 3.1 Type-C port.

An additional DisplayPort input allows the built-in projector to be used with external devices, extending its functionality beyond content stored on the phone itself.

Other hardware features include a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD card slot supporting up to 2TB of removable storage, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a rear camp light designed to provide stronger illumination than a typical smartphone flash.

For wireless connectivity, the device supports WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, eSIM functionality, and 5G NR networks.

The 8849 Tank 5 will ship with Android 16. The company has not provided any guarantee regarding future Android version upgrades or long-term security update support.
