Alphabet Raises AI Capital Spending to $205 Billion

By Sadia Afrin JoyaJuly 26, 20262 Mins Read

Alphabet raised its 2026 capital spending guidance to between $195 billion and $205 billion on July 22, up $15 billion from the prior range. The company is chasing an AI infrastructure race that shows no signs of slowing.

That $15 billion revision reflects the scale of Google’s bet on AI data centers, servers, and computing infrastructure. About 60 percent goes to servers and 40 percent to data centers and networking.

Strong Q2 Results, But Market Punishes Spending Plans

Google Cloud revenue jumped 82 percent to $24.8 billion in Q2 2026. Total group revenue climbed 24 percent to $119.8 billion. But on July 24, Alphabet stock fell 7 percent after the capex announcement. The market worried: are these investments paying off?

Free cash flow turned negative for the first time in recent quarters—a $1.1 billion deficit in Q2. Capital spending reached $15.3 billion, nearly double the prior-year quarter. The company is burning cash to build AI infrastructure faster than rivals can.

A Hypercaler Arms Race

Alphabet is not alone. Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are all increasing AI spending. Combined hyperscaler capex could reach $725 billion for all of 2026, according to industry estimates. Each company fears falling behind in the race to serve enterprise AI demand.

Google’s move signals confidence that AI revenue will follow the infrastructure buildout. Cloud growth of 82 percent in Q2 suggests that belief is not unfounded. But the market wants proof now, not promises.

What This Means for Customers

More infrastructure spending means more Google Cloud capacity, lower latency, and faster AI model serving. Enterprise customers betting on Google’s Gemini or custom models should see improved performance as the year progresses. Smaller competitors without this capital capacity will struggle to keep pace.

Alphabet’s spending is the biggest bet in corporate AI this year. The stock market is watching to see if it pays off.
