EDF’s Reported So Energy Interest Puts UK Solar Retail Market in Focus

By Saiful IslamSeptember 9, 20262 Mins Read

Reported talks between EDF and So Energy are putting the connection between household electricity supply and rooftop solar back in focus in the UK. The discussions do not amount to a completed deal, but they show why established energy companies are looking for ways to add customers and services as the retail market changes.

Reuters, citing Euronext information and people familiar with the matter, reported on September 7 that EDF was in talks to acquire So Energy. The report said So Energy has about 300,000 customers and operates as an energy retailer as well as a solar-panel installer. So Energy has also said it is exploring strategic options, meaning the ownership outcome remains open.

The potential transaction would give EDF a route to a customer base that is smaller than its existing UK operation but closely connected to the low-carbon home-energy market. Solar installers can build relationships with households before or during a purchase, while electricity suppliers can continue that relationship through tariffs, billing and energy-management services.

That model matters as customers face a more complicated decision about home energy. A solar installation can reduce electricity bought from the grid, but the value depends on the equipment, household usage, financing terms and the treatment of exported power. A supplier that combines those services would need to explain the costs clearly rather than present installation alone as a guaranteed saving.

Ofgem’s price-cap data also keeps pressure on suppliers to compete for customers. The regulator’s current information for the October-to-December period shows an average household cap of £1,723 a year, with the exact bill depending on use and payment method. The cap is not a quote for every home, but it gives consumers a reference point when they compare tariffs and solar proposals.

For the UK solar panel market, the most important question is what a combined business could offer after any transaction. Customers will want transparent installation standards, clear maintenance terms and a realistic explanation of payback. EDF and So Energy have not announced a completed acquisition, so further details on ownership, pricing and service plans still need to be confirmed by the companies.
