UST Takes Majority Stake in Audi-Linked Italdesign

By Saleh MohammadSeptember 9, 20262 Mins Read

UST has completed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Italdesign from the Audi Group, bringing a global design and engineering company into a partnership focused on software-defined mobility. Autocar Professional listed the transaction among its current automotive stories, while Italdesign, PRNewswire and ANSA provide the ownership and business details.

Italdesign will continue to operate under its own name after the transaction. The company works across vehicle design, engineering, prototyping and mobility services. Its official announcement describes the deal as a combination of Italdesign’s transport expertise with UST’s digital engineering, artificial intelligence and software capabilities.

Audi is not leaving the relationship entirely. ANSA reports that Audi will retain a 40 percent stake, while UST becomes the majority owner. That continuing role is important because it separates the ownership change from a full withdrawal. The transaction does not by itself announce a new Audi vehicle, a new Italdesign product or a change to an existing customer programme.

UST says the partnership will connect automotive design and engineering with software-defined vehicle work. In practical terms, that can include digital vehicle platforms, connected services, data systems and development tools. The companies have not provided a complete list of future projects, investment figures or product timelines, so those outcomes should not be treated as confirmed.

Italdesign has a long history of work in vehicle styling and industrial design. UST brings experience in technology services and digital engineering. The ownership structure gives both sides a reason to preserve Italdesign’s identity while adding access to software and AI capabilities. Whether that produces measurable changes will depend on the projects that are signed and the decisions made by customers.

The transaction is best read as a corporate and technology partnership rather than a consumer launch. It shows how automotive design firms are being linked with software specialists as vehicle development becomes more digital. For now, the confirmed facts are the majority acquisition, Audi’s reported 40 percent holding and the plan for Italdesign to continue under its existing name.
