Amazon updated Alexa Plus on July 24 with AI-powered natural language controls that understand complex home automation requests. The update lets users say things like “Alexa, my kid’s soccer jersey needs a deep clean with cold water only,” and Alexa automatically navigates the washer settings.

The new features expand Alexa+’s compatibility with products from Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, Sonoff, Govee, iRobot, Twinkly, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo and Eufy. The update represents Amazon’s biggest smart home push in years.

Natural Language Meets Complex Automation

Previous versions of Alexa required custom commands for each device. The new Alexa Plus understands conversational requests and automatically maps them to device settings. It learns user habits and suggests automations based on patterns.

The technical achievement is real. Rather than scripting each workflow, users can speak naturally and Alexa figures out the steps. For busy households, this saves time configuring automations one by one.

Third-Party Ecosystem Matters

The update includes developer tools—an AI-powered smart home toolkit, Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, and Amazon Wallet integration for voice purchases. Third-party device makers can now integrate faster with Alexa Plus.

This matters because smart home fragmentation is the industry’s biggest problem. Every device needs its own app. Alexa Plus consolidates control, but only if manufacturers choose to integrate.

The Competitive Landscape

Google Assistant and Apple Siri are also improving natural language understanding. Amazon’s edge is installed base—tens of millions of Echo devices in US homes. That data advantage is real.

But cloud AI from Microsoft, Google, and anthropic are catching up fast. Alexa will not dominate voice control by default for much longer.
