Amazon Q3 2026 Earnings: Stock Surges 14% on Strong AWS Cloud Growth

By Sadia Afrin JoyaAugust 1, 20262 Mins Read

Amazon reported Q3 2026 earnings in early August and surged 14% in after-hours trading as investors rewarded the company for solid cloud growth. The earnings beat came as the mega-cap tech sector sorted through divergent AI spending strategies.

Amazon Q3 2026 earnings AWS cloud

Amazon wrapped up the tech earnings season on a strong note. The company’s AWS division delivered the growth story investors wanted to hear, offsetting broader concerns about profitability from heavy capex.

AWS Cloud Growth Outpaces Expectations

Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud infrastructure division, expanded faster than analysts projected. The division now represents the majority of Amazon’s operating profit despite being a smaller portion of total revenue.

Generative AI workloads drove part of the growth. Customers deployed inference models and fine-tuning on AWS infrastructure. Amazon’s own AI chips reduced dependency on NVIDIA, improving unit economics.

E-Commerce Steady, Advertising Accelerating

Amazon’s core e-commerce business grew modestly. But advertising, the highest-margin segment, accelerated. Merchants now spend heavily on Amazon’s ad platform to reach the 200+ million Prime members.

The advertising business proved resilient even as Amazon increased content costs for Prime Video. This mix shift helps margins, a key concern on the earnings call.

Market Divergence on AI Spending

Meta spent aggressively on AI infrastructure and faced stock pressure. Microsoft gained applause for disciplined capex with strong cloud returns. Amazon landed in the middle: spending on AI but showing clear path to profit.

The divergence matters because markets are rotating from “spend at all costs” to “show me the ROI.” Amazon’s AWS results proved that heavy infrastructure investment can return profit in near term, not just theoretical long-term upside.

Amazon’s earnings signal that AI spending works when companies have a clear customer for the output.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

Why did Amazon stock jump after earnings?

AWS growth beat expectations, advertising business accelerated, and management showed disciplined spending. Investors rewarded clarity on profitability.
