Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in self-reported annual revenue, hitting a $47 billion run rate by May 2026. OpenAI’s revenue sits between $25 billion and $33 billion, according to the company’s own claims. The shift marks a significant turning point in AI industry economics, reported by Fortune on July 2, 2026.
This is not about user counts or brand recognition. OpenAI still has massive consumer recognition through ChatGPT. The gap is in business model execution. Anthropic sells enterprise contracts. OpenAI sells subscriptions to consumers. One scales faster than the other.
The Business Model Difference
Anthropic focused early on enterprise customers using Claude for customer service, content analysis, code generation, and other high-value tasks. These customers sign large, recurring contracts. Revenue is predictable and sticky. A customer using Claude for a critical business process doesn’t switch easily.
OpenAI initially bet on consumer adoption through ChatGPT subscriptions. User growth exploded, but then plateaued after mid-2023. Monthly ChatGPT visits fell below the majority of the generative AI market for the first time in May 2026.
Profitability and Path Forward
Anthropic reported profitability in Q4 2025 and projects sustainable profitability by 2029. The company is making money now on current operations. OpenAI has not reached profitability and has not provided a timeline for when it will.
This matters for long-term viability. A profitable company can reinvest, survive market downturns, and operate independently. An unprofitable company needs continuous funding and outside support.
Why Enterprise Won
Consumer AI markets are competitive. ChatGPT faced challenges from Google Gemini, DeepSeek, and others. Consumer willingness to pay for AI assistants proved lower than expected. Businesses, by contrast, adopt AI when it saves money or increases revenue. The ROI calculation is clear.
The revenue reversal signals a maturation in AI commercialization. Winners are determined by business model, not just technology.
