Apple’s C2 modem brings a new split to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup

By Abul KalamSeptember 11, 20262 Mins Read

Apple’s new C2 cellular modem appears in the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Duo, but the iPhone 18 Pro Max may use a different modem in the United States. The detail emerged from Apple’s product announcement and regional technical specifications after the September 9 event.

C2 modem

Apple says C2 improves cellular quality and reliability with on-device intelligence. The company also says the C2 modem delivers faster uploads than the C1X and uses 15 percent less energy. Apple’s U.S. specifications list support for both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G on the iPhone 18 Pro.

MacRumors reported that Apple’s technical-specification page lists C2 for the smaller iPhone 18 Pro but does not list it for the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max. The publication also noted that the two models show different LTE band information, which supports treating them as distinct modem configurations rather than assuming a page error.

The public specifications do not explain why the two U.S. Pro models would use different modem hardware. MacRumors said the Pro Max could continue to use Qualcomm hardware in the U.S., while C2 may appear across more regions where mmWave support is not required.

Outside the United States, the situation may be different. Apple’s technical pages vary by market, and the C2 feature appears on the iPhone Duo specification page. The exact modem supplier for every regional iPhone 18 Pro Max model should therefore be checked against the local Apple specification before purchase.

The modem story is separate from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Both iPhone 18 Pro models include Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. C2 handles cellular connectivity, while N1 covers several short-range and local-network functions.

Apple will accept iPhone 18 Pro preorders on September 12, with store availability on September 18. Buyers comparing the Pro and Pro Max should check the model number and country-specific technical page, because the modem distinction may affect the cellular features available in a particular market.
