Apple announced iOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8 in Cupertino. The update, scheduled for release in the fall, brings a rebuilt version of Siri powered by Google Gemini, a redesigned visual system called Liquid Glass, and a major expansion of Apple Intelligence features.
The new Siri carries the name Siri AI internally. Apple said it will be more conversational, context-aware, and capable of completing complex tasks across apps without manual navigation. A partnership with Google places Gemini models under the hood, giving Siri access to one of the most capable AI systems currently available.
Siri AI will appear as a standalone app for the first time, in addition to its existing integration across the operating system. The redesigned assistant can respond to visual input, understand follow-up questions, and operate more naturally in back-and-forth conversations than the previous version.
The Liquid Glass design system introduces a new visual aesthetic across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. App icons are more vibrant, windows have a unified corner radius, and a new opacity slider allows users to adjust how transparent interface elements appear. The design addresses criticism of macOS Tahoe’s rounded corners by applying a consistent standard across the platform.
iOS 27 is compatible with the iPhone 11 and later. This is broader than macOS 27 Golden Gate, which Apple confirmed is restricted to Apple silicon Macs only, ending support for all Intel-based hardware with this generation.
Other features in iOS 27 include faster AirDrop transfers, improved Spotlight search, smarter suggestions in Messages and Mail, and advanced editing tools in Photos. Screen Time controls have been redesigned with stronger parental management options, partly in response to growing legislative pressure in several countries.
The Apple Intelligence suite is expanding with iOS 27 to include new writing tools, image generation updates, and deeper integration with third-party apps. Developers gained access to updated APIs at WWDC to begin building compatible features.
Apple also announced the Apple-Google AI partnership formally at WWDC, confirming a collaboration that analysts had speculated about for months. The arrangement gives Apple access to Gemini’s capabilities while Google gains deeper placement on Apple devices, which account for roughly one billion active iPhones worldwide.
According to Apple’s developer documentation, the iOS 27 public beta will open to registered users in July, with the stable release expected in September alongside the next iPhone launch. Full Apple Intelligence features will roll out in phases through the end of the year.
