Apple Ramping iPhone Fold Production to 10 Million Units for September Launch

By Rithe RoseJuly 24, 20262 Mins Read

Apple has raised foldable iPhone production targets to around 10 million units for 2026, up from previous estimates of 7 to 8 million. The move signals serious confidence in the device ahead of its September launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The foldable will carry a premium price: IDC predicts an average selling price of $2,500, with storage variants reaching as high as $3,000. That’s at the upper end of Apple’s current lineup, but the company is betting early adopters will pay for something genuinely different.

Design Philosophy: Thin and Durable

The iPhone Fold will be around 5.5 inches closed and 7.8 inches open. Apple is targeting 4.5 mm thickness when folded, which would make it the thinnest iPhone ever. To handle that thinness without breaking, the company is using a titanium chassis and spent considerable time engineering a durable hinge and near-crease-free display.

That engineering matters. Competitors have faced hinge durability complaints for years. If Apple gets this right, even thickness bragging rights could influence purchase decisions.

Inventory Concerns and Timeline

Supply chain signals suggest inventory may not be abundant at launch. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo notes there might not be enough stock for the iPhone Fold to go on sale immediately after the September introduction. This isn’t unusual for high-demand new categories, but it means early birds may need to wait.

Samsung’s Fold 8 launches in August at $1,900, giving consumers a comparison point. Apple’s $2,500 starting price is bold, but the company has never competed on price in the premium segment. The question is whether the Fold’s design and software integration justify the gap.

Apple’s production bet suggests they’re treating the foldable as a real revenue driver, not an experiment.
