BTS Refuses 2027 Grammy Submission Over Asian Pop Performance Category

By Yousuf ParvezJuly 30, 20262 Mins Read

BTS announced July 29 that the group will not submit music for the 2027 Grammy Awards. All seven members posted identical statements to Instagram, citing concerns over the newly introduced “Asian Pop Performance” category. The decision came after the Recording Academy restructured award categories to separate Asian pop from mainstream categories.

The group’s latest album Arirang sits atop global charts. Strong contention for major Grammy categories was likely. Instead, BTS chose not to participate. The move signals a protest against what many in the industry view as category fragmentation along racial and linguistic lines.

Why the new category triggered the boycott

The Grammy Awards introduced the Asian Pop Performance category last month. Defenders argued it celebrates the growing influence of Asian music. Critics called it segregation. BTS’s response: music should be loved universally, not divided by region or language. The group’s statement suggested frustration with timing — the category appeared just as they were positioned to compete in major awards.

HYBE, the label managing BTS, stated the Academy made this change “at a time when BTS was considered to have the highest chance of winning the main award.” That framing matters. The boycott reads as principle, but context suggests market power. When major artists refuse to participate, award show credibility weakens.

Grammy leadership responds with respect, not argument

Grammy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. issued a statement saying he was saddened but understood BTS’s decision and respected their choice. No defense of the category followed. No public argument occurred. That restraint suggests the Grammys may reconsider the structure.

When artists with global reach refuse nomination, broadcasters lose viewership. Sponsors pull back. The economic pressure compounds on award bodies that alienate talent. BTS’s boycott carries financial weight beyond symbolic protest.

What this means for award show categories moving forward

BTS aren’t alone in questioning category divisions. Other international artists have privately expressed frustration with categorization that emphasizes origin over artistry. BTS made their frustration public. Industry observers will watch whether other major Asian artists follow.

The Grammys face a choice. Defend the Asian Pop category as celebrating diversity. Or quietly restructure and claim it was always exploratory. BTS’s move gives them cover to do the latter.

BTS just reminded award shows that category structure isn’t neutral. It’s a statement about which artists belong where.
