Formula E Tokyo ePrix Returns As Spectacular Night Race

By Tusher DebnathJuly 26, 20262 Mins Read

Formula E’s Tokyo ePrix races July 25-26 at Tokyo Big Sight, a temporary street circuit running two nights of competition under stadium lights. The double-header format—Friday and Saturday evening—makes it unique in the series, blending motorsport with spectacle and street fair atmosphere.

Both nights start at 20:05 local time. Friday (July 25) kicks off qualifying and the first race, while Saturday (July 26) features more practice, qualifying, and the final race. The illuminated circuit transforms Tokyo waterfront into a roaring carnival of speed and sound.

Tokyo’s Most Visual Racing Experience

The night-race format amplifies Formula E’s visual appeal. The circuit gleams with street lights complementing the drivers’ glowing brake discs and luminous track markers. Photographers and broadcast cameras capture angles that daytime racing simply cannot match.

Beyond racing, the venue hosts food vendors, live music, EV technology exhibits, and fan zones. It’s a two-day festival where motorsport shares space with cultural events—a format Tokyo perfected and other cities are now copying.

Season Championship Still Wide Open

The Tokyo rounds come mid-season with the championship still contested. Tokyo has historically favored attacking driving and high-speed overtakes, rewarding pilots who can manage energy reserves and aggression. Multiple teams enter with genuine title chances.

The night lighting changes how drivers perceive corners and braking zones. Shadows and glare create unique challenges that daytime conditioning cannot prepare for, leveling the field slightly and opening surprises.

Tokyo’s combination of night racing, vibrant energy, and top-tier competition makes it one of the season’s most compelling events.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

Why does Formula E race at night in Tokyo?

Tokyo Big Sight sits on a man-made island with limited daytime availability. Night racing lets the venue run concerts and exhibitions during the day, maximizing the space. It also creates a completely different spectacle—night racing is rare in motorsport and draws casual fans who wouldn’t attend a weekend race.
