The European Commission ordered Google on July 16 to give rival AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude the same deep Android access it reserves for Gemini, with changes due by mid-2027.

Gemini had previously enjoyed system-level privileges on Android that third-party AI apps could not get. ChatGPT and Claude will now be able to use the same wake word triggers, screen context reading, and in-app task capabilities that Gemini can access.
What This Means for Users
The ruling breaks Gemini’s monopoly on Android’s deepest integrations. Starting next year, you’ll be able to set ChatGPT or Claude as your default assistant. They’ll respond to your custom wake word. They’ll see what’s on your screen and help you draft emails or place orders without leaving the app you’re using.
This is a major shift. Google built Android as a closed system for its own AI. Now it must open those doors to competitors.
Implementation Timeline
Android interoperability must be built into the next major Android version, expected around mid-2027, no later than August 1, 2027. Google must also share anonymized search data with rival search engines and AI companies starting January 2027.
Geographic Scope
This is EU-only for now. US Android phones are not affected yet. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) applies to the European Union, where Google faces constant regulatory pressure over its market dominance.
The real test comes when the changes ship. Will they be seamless, or will Google find technical reasons to delay? History suggests the company will comply, but not without a fight.
