Bungie’s original Halo is getting a full remake on July 28 under the title “Halo: Campaign Evolved.” The remake preserves the original campaign but adds new missions, weapons, and gameplay mechanics updated for modern systems.
The remake ships on Xbox and PC and includes the original story missions plus additional content that extends the campaign. Players are reporting that the new missions add 4-5 hours to the traditional 10-hour campaign.
What’s Different
The remake updates Halo’s graphics engine to current-generation quality. Combat feels faster and more responsive. AI enemies have more sophisticated behavior patterns. The iconic Warthog runs and split-screen co-op return with modern netcode supporting online play.
Weapon balance has been adjusted to match modern shooter expectations. The energy shield and motion tracker remain core to gameplay, but new weapon variants give players more loadout choices.
Nostalgia and New Players
The remake targets two audiences: original Halo players revisiting a classic, and new players who’ve never experienced the 2001 game. For veterans, the new missions and updated mechanics offer fresh challenges. For newcomers, Halo: Campaign Evolved is the definitive version to start with.
Multiplayer is not included in the remake — that remains separate in Halo Infinite and upcoming Halo titles.
The Franchise Context
Halo has been central to Xbox’s identity for 25 years. Remaking the original is a statement of commitment to the series and a way to introduce the franchise to players who started gaming after 2001.
Halo: Campaign Evolved proves remakes can work when executed with respect for the original and confidence in updating its core ideas.
