House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on Max, written by Sara Hess and directed by Clare Kilner. The episode picks up in the immediate aftermath of Prince Jacaerys Velaryon’s death, a loss that upends Queen Rhaenyra’s war plans at the worst possible moment.

The third and final season of the Game of Thrones prequel launched on June 21 to strong reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 3 holds a 91% approval rating from 64 critics, with reviewers calling it the exciting and inevitable conclusion that Season 2 failed to deliver.
What to expect in Episode 2
Rhaenyra entered Season 3 believing she could take King’s Landing with minimal bloodshed. Jace’s death at the end of Episode 1 forces a brutal reassessment. Episode 2, which Sara Hess wrote and Clare Kilner directed, examines that grief alongside the political fallout — the Blacks’ claim to the throne has just lost one of its most capable military minds and Rhaenyra’s chosen heir.
The episode is expected to spend time on the war council scenes that the show has used effectively this season, as well as continuing the buildup toward what showrunners have promised will be a Dragon-heavy final act. Variety’s review of the full season praised the show for delivering on the promise of Targaryen warfare that viewers have been waiting for since Season 1.
How the final season is structured
Season 3 consists of eight episodes, airing weekly on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET through the series finale on August 9, 2026. New episodes drop simultaneously on Max in the United States and Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom. The season covers the final stages of the Dance of the Dragons — the Targaryen civil war that reshaped the realm.
The cast returns in full: Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II, and Ewan Mitchell as Aemond. The show has been renewed for a final run of eight episodes after Season 2 drew criticism for moving too slowly through its source material.
Why the stakes feel different this season
House of the Dragon debuted in 2022 and immediately became one of the most-watched shows in HBO history, drawing 20 million viewers across all platforms in its first week. Season 2 in 2024 kept those numbers while drawing criticism for its pacing. Season 3 addresses that complaint directly — Episode 1 has already been praised for its action and emotional clarity.
The series is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, covering a period that takes place roughly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Martin, who has been closely involved with the production, has called this final season the version of the story he always wanted to see on screen.
Episode 2 airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET on Max. New episodes continue every Sunday through August 9.
FYI (keeping you in the loop)
Do I need to watch House of the Dragon from the beginning?
Yes, Season 3 picks up directly from the end of Season 2. The Dance of the Dragons storyline requires knowledge of the characters and their relationships. Seasons 1 and 2 are both available on Max.
