Ikka: Sunny Deol Reunites With Akshaye Khanna in Netflix Legal Thriller

By Tusher DebnathJuly 28, 20262 Mins Read

Ikka, a legal thriller starring Sunny Deol, premieres on Netflix on July 10, 2026, marking the actor’s major streaming debut. Directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra and produced by Alchemy Films, the courtroom drama reunites Deol with Akshaye Khanna nearly three decades after their iconic 1997 collaboration in Border.

Back in Court After 30 Years

Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna last appeared together in 1997. Now, with Deol transitioning to streaming and Khanna established in web series, their reunion carries weight. The film’s premise centers on high-stakes legal battles and moral complexity—territory Deol hasn’t fully explored in recent years.

Deol has built a career on action heroics. This pivot to the courtroom reflects a broader shift in Bollywood where established stars are testing themselves in narrative-driven streaming content. For Deol, it’s a deliberate attempt to show range beyond what television and film audiences have seen.

Netflix’s Play for Substance

Netflix greenlighting Ikka signals confidence in serious Indian legal drama. The streamer has backed several crime and courtroom series—Sacred Games, Paatal Lok, Delhi Crime—but Ikka pairs that gravitas with A-list talent. Pairing a major star with a complex script is Netflix’s template for capturing both mainstream and critical attention.

The July 10 release date puts Ikka at the start of the second half of the month, a slot Netflix often reserves for tent-pole releases. Netflix has already signaled this is a prestige title, not filler.

What’s at Stake

For Deol, success means proving he can anchor dramatic storytelling on streaming. For Netflix India, it’s validation that premium Bollywood talent will move to the platform for the right project. For audiences, it’s a chance to see two skilled actors tackle material that asks more than action provides.

Streaming has changed what kinds of stories Bollywood can tell. Ikka is one test of whether that freedom extends to the stars who built their careers in a different era.
