Apple‘s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to feature a variable-aperture camera, marking the first time Apple has added this capability to its flagship phones. The upgrade emerged from MacRumors reporting on July 22 after months of speculation about the September launch device.

A camera aperture is the opening inside a lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor. Think of it like your eye’s pupil—it widens in darkness to let in more light, narrows in bright sun to protect the sensor.
The Current Limitation
Today’s iPhone cameras have fixed apertures. The main sensor typically opens to f/1.6 or f/1.8 and stays there. When you photograph a dark scene, software processing and longer exposures compensate, but the lens itself can’t adapt.
Professionals and camera makers have used variable apertures for decades. A wider aperture in low light gathers more photons. A narrower aperture in daylight improves depth-of-field control and reduces glare.
Why Apple Is Adding It Now
The iPhone 18 Pro will pair the variable aperture with a 48-megapixel main sensor and 24-megapixel front camera. Software that understands scene conditions can now adjust the lens in real time, optimizing for lighting, depth of field, and artifact reduction without the computational overhead of today’s approach.
All iPhone 18 models could also jump to 24-megapixel front cameras, up from 18 megapixels. For FaceTime and selfies, that means sharper detail and better performance in video calls.
What’s Coming
Apple expects to announce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable “iPhone Ultra” in the first week of September. The standard iPhone 18 will arrive later in early 2027.
Variable aperture is a small feature that solves a real problem. Professional photographers will notice. Most users won’t, but they’ll see sharper photos without thinking about why.
