iPhone Duo makes side-by-side app work a core iOS feature

By Abul KalamSeptember 11, 20262 Mins Read

The iPhone Duo will let users run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Apple describes Split View as one of the main ways the foldable device uses its 7.6-inch inner display, while MacRumors reports that the system can also keep two windows of the same app open.

Split View

In Apple’s design, a user moves one app to one side of the inner display and launches another on the other side. The arrangement is meant for tasks that normally require repeated app switching, such as reading a page while writing a note or viewing a message while checking a calendar.

The feature is not limited to two different apps. MacRumors says the Duo can open two windows of the same app, including Safari. That matters for comparison work, because a user can keep two browser pages visible instead of relying on a chain of back-and-forward gestures.

Apple also says users can talk with Siri AI on one side while viewing content on the other. The company’s announcement presents the inner display as a larger canvas for productivity, gaming and media. Split View is the part that changes the phone from a single-app screen into a small workspace.

Users can swap apps and save pairs for later. A saved pair can bring two frequently used apps back together without rebuilding the layout each time. Apple has not described every limit of the feature, and the experience will still depend on whether individual apps support the new display behavior.

MacRumors’ coverage of iOS 27 says Apple is providing developers with APIs for the Duo’s changing screen arrangement. That should help apps respond when the phone is opened, closed or held at an angle. It also means a split-screen layout is part of the operating-system design rather than a special mode from one app maker.

Apple says the iPhone Duo will be available from October 23 after preorders begin October 16. The device starts at $1,999 in the United States. The practical value of Split View will be clearer when customers can test how their most-used apps behave across the two displays.
