iPhone Duo’s under-screen camera keeps its resolution undisclosed

By Abul KalamSeptember 11, 20262 Mins Read

Apple has confirmed an under-display FaceTime camera for the inner screen of the iPhone Duo, but it has not published the sensor’s megapixel count. The omission was highlighted in a September 10 MacRumors report after Apple posted the foldable phone’s technical specifications.

iPhone Duo

Apple’s specification page lists an f/1.8 aperture, Center Stage for video calls, electronic stabilization and 1080p recording at 30 or 60 frames per second. It also lists support for Animoji and Memoji, wide color capture, lens correction and audio features for calls and video.

The outer front camera is listed separately as a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. The rear system has two 48-megapixel Fusion lenses. Apple gives those cameras clear resolution figures, which makes the missing number for the inner camera a notable difference in the specification sheet.

MacRumors calculated that a camera recording 1080p video needs at least roughly two megapixels for that output. The report also said the absence of 4K video may point to a smaller sensor, but it did not present that as a confirmed resolution or image-quality measurement.

Putting a camera behind a flexible display involves a trade-off. The screen must allow enough light to reach the lens while preserving a usable image across the display area. The published aperture is wider than the outer camera’s f/2.2 figure, which may help compensate for light lost through the panel.

The same technical page identifies an inner camera that works when the phone is open or positioned for a call. It does not provide a separate still-photo megapixel rating, a sensor-size figure or a detailed image-quality claim for that camera.

The iPhone Duo will be available from October 23, with preorders beginning October 16. Until independent reviews test the camera in calls, photos and low light, the resolution and final image quality should be treated as unanswered product details rather than filled in by speculation.
