Israel and Hezbollah Agree New Ceasefire on Juneteenth as Iran Deal Wavers

By Saumya Sarakarজুন 19, 20263 Mins Read

Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a fresh ceasefire in Lebanon on Friday, with the truce taking effect at 4 p.m. local time after the most intense fighting between the two sides since the United States and Iran ended their war earlier this month.

The fighting killed four Israeli soldiers and triggered an Iranian demand that Israel stop its Lebanon operations before nuclear negotiations could begin in Geneva. That demand directly led to the delay of US-Iran talks on Friday, with Vice President JD Vance cancelling his Switzerland trip after Tehran suspended its negotiating delegation.

Iran said Israel had violated the memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran on June 14 more than 84 times in the preceding 48 hours. The MOU calls for the cessation of all Israeli military activity in Lebanon as a condition for the diplomatic process to advance. Israel disputes the characterization, saying its actions are targeted at Hezbollah infrastructure and are not covered by the bilateral US-Iran agreement.

The ceasefire brokered Friday was mediated by the same diplomatic team — the United States, Qatar, and Pakistan — that arranged the original US-Iran MOU. US envoys worked through the night to broker the pause. Hezbollah confirmed in a statement that it had accepted the terms. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office acknowledged the arrangement without using the word ceasefire.

The violence began on June 17 when Hezbollah launched a barrage of projectiles toward northern Israel following an Israeli airstrike on the southern Beirut suburbs. Israel responded with strikes on a Hezbollah weapons depot and command post in the Bekaa Valley. Two days of exchanges followed before both sides agreed to pull back.

The episode illustrated how fragile the wider Middle East stability remains even after the major US-Iran deal. The MOU addressed the Iranian military front but left the Lebanon dimension dependent on a separate set of understandings that both Israel and Hezbollah have shown limited willingness to honor in full. Since the original November 2025 ceasefire in Lebanon, violations have been recorded by both sides dozens of times.

Iran’s foreign ministry called on the United States to guarantee Israeli compliance as a precondition for resuming the Geneva talks. The White House said it was in direct contact with the Israeli government but stopped short of making any explicit commitment. Formal nuclear talks had been scheduled for Friday before Vance’s trip was called off.

Oil markets showed little reaction to the new ceasefire announcement, having already absorbed much of the uncertainty from Thursday’s delay. Brent crude was trading around $79 a barrel on Friday afternoon, significantly below its peak above $94 during the height of the US-Iran strikes in early June.

Analysts watching the situation said the ceasefire, if it holds, could allow the Geneva nuclear talks to resume within days. A senior official at the Atlantic Council said the episode showed that the architecture of the deal was solid even if the implementation would be contested at every step. Iran’s 440-kilogram uranium stockpile remained the most complex item on the eventual negotiating agenda.

The United Nations called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint. The UN Secretary-General’s spokesman said the world could not afford another escalation cycle in the region and urged both Israel and Hezbollah to give diplomacy a chance to work.
