MacBook Air M5 Early Benchmarks Show Faster Performance Than M4

By Shahriar FahimMarch 10, 20263 Mins Read

The MacBook Air M5 has begun appearing in early performance tests only days after its introduction, and initial results suggest the new chip delivers measurable gains over the previous generation. Early benchmark comparisons show the MacBook Air M5 outperforming the MacBook Air M4 in both single-core and multi-core processing tests.

The early testing took place shortly after the device was unboxed and updated to the latest macOS build. While the evaluation remains preliminary, the results offer an early look at how Apple’s newest Air model compares with the widely used M4 version.

MacBook Air M5 Shows Measurable Gains in CPU and GPU Benchmarks

Initial Geekbench testing places the MacBook Air M5 ahead of the MacBook Air M4 in core processor performance. The M5 model recorded a single-core score of 4190 and a multi-core score of 17073. By comparison, the MacBook Air M4 scored 3832 for single-core and 15034 for multi-core processing.

Both laptops share a similar chip structure. Each processor uses a 10-core design with four performance cores and six efficiency cores. The main difference appears in clock speed, where the M5 runs slightly higher at about 4.46GHz compared with roughly 4.41GHz on the M4.

Graphics processing also shows improvement. In OpenCL tests, the MacBook Air M5 posted a GPU score above 47,000 while the M4 recorded just over 30,000. Metal graphics results were closer, but the M5 still maintained a small lead.

The M5 chip introduces a neural accelerator integrated into each GPU core, a design change intended to support AI-driven processing tasks and graphics workloads. This architecture may explain the larger jump seen in OpenCL performance tests.

Early real-world testing also suggests the system handles heavy multitasking without slowdown. During testing, the laptop ran multiple demanding applications at the same time. These included video editing software, photo editing tools, web browsers with many open tabs, and a modern game.

Apple’s Thin Laptop Line Moves Closer to Pro-Level Performance

The early benchmark results point to a steady performance progression in Apple’s Air lineup. The MacBook Air series traditionally targets portability and battery efficiency rather than peak performance.

However, the MacBook Air M5 appears capable of handling workloads once associated with higher-end laptops. Creative tools, light video editing, and photo processing all ran smoothly during the initial testing period.

Memory configuration may also contribute to this stability. The tested system included 16GB of RAM, which helps manage multiple open programs without slowing down system responsiveness.

Further performance testing will determine how the MacBook Air M5 performs under sustained workloads. Additional benchmarks, including extended rendering tests and storage speed evaluations, are expected as full reviews continue.

The early data suggests the MacBook Air M5 continues Apple’s pattern of incremental chip improvements. Even modest clock speed increases and GPU enhancements appear to give the latest MacBook Air a noticeable performance edge over the M4 model.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)-

How much faster is the MacBook Air M5 than the M4?

Early benchmark tests show the MacBook Air M5 scoring around 4190 in single-core and 17073 in multi-core Geekbench results. The M4 version scored 3832 and 15034 respectively.

Does the MacBook Air M5 have a new processor design?

The M5 chip keeps a similar 10-core layout with four performance cores and six efficiency cores. The main changes involve higher clock speeds and improved GPU architecture.

Is the MacBook Air M5 suitable for heavy tasks?

Early testing shows the device running demanding software such as video editing and photo editing tools alongside multiple browser tabs without noticeable slowdown.
