MacBook Ultra With OLED and Touchscreen Reportedly Planned by Apple

By Shahriar FahimMarch 9, 20263 Mins Read

Apple is reportedly preparing a new high-end laptop called the MacBook Ultra, expected to launch later in 2026. The device is said to feature an OLED display and touchscreen support, two upgrades that have never appeared on a MacBook before.

The rumored MacBook Ultra would sit above the current MacBook Pro lineup. Instead of replacing existing models, it may become Apple’s most premium laptop category with a higher price point.

Apple reportedly exploring a new top-tier MacBook design

The MacBook Ultra is expected to introduce several design changes. One of the most notable is the use of an OLED display, which could improve brightness, contrast, and color accuracy compared with today’s mini-LED panels used in MacBook Pro models.

Touchscreen capability is also believed to be part of the device. Apple has historically resisted touchscreens on Mac computers, arguing that macOS was designed primarily for keyboard and trackpad interaction.

If introduced, the feature would mark a major shift in Apple’s laptop philosophy. It would also place the MacBook Ultra closer to competing premium Windows laptops that already support touch input.

MacBook Ultra expected to sit above the MacBook Pro lineup

Current reports suggest the MacBook Ultra will not replace MacBook Pro models powered by Apple’s M-series chips. Instead, the device could become a new flagship tier above the Pro lineup.

This positioning would allow Apple to introduce more expensive configurations. Past transitions to OLED screens on other Apple products have come with price increases, suggesting the MacBook Ultra could carry a noticeably higher cost than existing MacBook Pro models.

Apple has gradually expanded its product lineup in both directions. Lower-priced devices target entry-level buyers, while new premium models push the upper limits of the company’s hardware offerings.

The MacBook Ultra would fit that strategy by serving users who want the most advanced Mac laptop available, potentially with new display technology and additional hardware improvements.

Apple expanding premium “Ultra” branding across devices

The Ultra branding has already appeared in several Apple products. The Apple Watch Ultra introduced a rugged, high-end smartwatch option, while the M-series “Ultra” chips represent the most powerful processors in Apple’s lineup.

Extending that name to a MacBook would signal the company’s intention to clearly separate its highest-tier devices from standard models. It would also align with a broader push toward premium hardware categories.

Industry discussions have also pointed to possible future products carrying the Ultra name. These could include devices with experimental features or significantly higher pricing compared with current models.

For now, the MacBook Ultra remains a reported development rather than an officially announced product. If Apple moves forward with the plan, the MacBook Ultra could become the company’s most advanced laptop when it arrives later in 2026.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)-

What is the MacBook Ultra?

The MacBook Ultra is a reported upcoming Apple laptop expected to sit above the MacBook Pro lineup. It may include an OLED display and touchscreen support, making it the most premium MacBook model.

Will the MacBook Ultra replace the MacBook Pro?

No indication suggests that the MacBook Ultra will replace the MacBook Pro. Current reports suggest it will be an additional model positioned above the existing MacBook Pro range.
