Meta rolled out Muse Image on July 7, 2026, the company’s first image generation model built inside Meta Superintelligence Labs. Users can now generate, edit, and share images directly from Meta AI on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The model uses advanced reasoning to understand complex prompts and blend multiple photos into high-quality results.

How Muse Image Works
Unlike earlier generation tools that struggle with detailed, multi-object prompts, Muse Image reasons through what you’re asking for. It can handle requests like “a grandmother and grandchild at a café in 1970s style photography” or “merge these three photos into one cohesive scene.” The model runs directly inside Meta’s chat and story surfaces, so results appear instantly.
Editing is built in. After generating an image, you can refine specific elements—change a person’s expression, swap an object in the background, adjust lighting—without regenerating from scratch. This iterative workflow reflects how people actually create and edit images.
Competing With the Incumbents
Muse Image enters a market where OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, Google’s Imagen 3, and others already have users. Meta’s advantage is distribution: billions of people already use Meta’s apps daily. Rolling image generation directly into Facebook and Instagram removes friction. It’s not a separate app you download—it’s already there.
The model’s rollout includes additional markets and surfaces on Instagram and WhatsApp beyond the initial launch. Meta is targeting creators and casual users alike, emphasizing ease of use over technical customization.
Part of a Bigger AI Push
Muse Image complements Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1, the agentic model announced earlier in July. Meta is positioning itself as an AI company first, leveraging its massive user base to experiment with new capabilities faster than rivals can. This dual focus on image generation and reasoning agents suggests Meta sees the next frontier as multi-modal, agentic AI that can think and create.
Meta is betting that the easiest way to get billions of people to use AI is to put it where they already spend time. Muse Image is that bet made concrete.
