Netflix released all eight episodes of its Little House on the Prairie adaptation Thursday, bringing Laura Ingalls Wilder classic stories to a new generation. Developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine for streaming, the series was renewed for a second season in March 2026, months before its premiere, signaling Netflix confidence in the project.
The new version stars 10-year-old Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, with Luke Bracey as Charles, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline, and Skywalker Hughes as Mary. The ensemble cast brings Wilder sensibility to the period drama, emphasizing family bonds and frontier hardship over the original NBC series comfort.
Fresh Adaptation for Streaming
Sonnenshine adapted the source material for modern audiences, maintaining the emotional core of Wilder stories while updating the narrative approach. The series was produced by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content, commissioned by Netflix in January 2025. This represents Netflix investment in prestige period dramas competing with HBO and other streamers.
The decision to release all episodes simultaneously follows Netflix strategy of driving subscriptions through binge-friendly content drops. The strategy proved successful for other prestige dramas, maximizing cultural conversation and word-of-mouth enthusiasm.
Literary Heritage on Screen
Wilder novels remain beloved more than 60 years after the original NBC series, with multiple generations discovering the books through school curricula. This new adaptation introduces the stories to Gen Z viewers who may lack familiarity with both the books and original television series.
Little House on the Prairie is now streaming on Netflix.
