Perseid meteor shower photos capture peak night streaks

By Nadia KhanomAugust 14, 20262 Mins Read

Photographers around the world spent the night of August 12 capturing the Perseid meteor shower at its peak, with images now circulating from Texas to Turkey to China showing bright streaks cutting across dark, moonless skies.

The shower peaked overnight between August 12 and 13, with the International Meteor Organization placing the nominal peak between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. UTC on August 13, according to Space.com. A new moon during the peak window meant almost no natural light interference, giving observers in dark sky locations a clear shot at the 50 to 75 meteors per hour the Perseids typically produce in ideal conditions.

Notable images collected by Space.com included a long meteor streak above Pedernales Falls State Park in Texas, a green fireball captured over a church in Kirsehir, Turkey, and a Perseid streaking above Shaoguan in China’s Guangdong province, all taken on the peak night. The timing added extra drama in some regions, with the peak arriving just hours after a total solar eclipse crossed parts of the globe.

The Perseids remain active into late August even though the peak has now passed, meaning viewers who missed the main night can still catch meteors, just at a noticeably lower rate than during peak activity. The shower is produced by debris from comet Swift Tuttle, which the Earth passes through every year around this time, and remains one of the most reliable annual meteor displays because of how consistently it performs.

Astronomy groups tracking the shower say the best remaining viewing window runs through the rest of this week, with the hours after midnight and before dawn still offering the clearest chances for stray Perseids as the display winds down toward its typical late August end date.

Astronomers note that the shower’s tail end rarely draws the same attention as the peak itself, even though the physics are identical, just with fewer meteors streaking through each hour as Earth moves out of the densest part of the comet debris trail.
