PlayStation Games Getting Delisted: 2K Sports Shuts Online Services August 31

By Rithe RoseJuly 28, 20262 Mins Read

Over ten PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games are losing online services or getting delisted by August 2026, a reminder that digital ownership is contingent on publisher support. 2K’s sports titles NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 and WWE 2K Battlegrounds will have their online services turned off on August 31, 2026. Players who own these games will lose multiplayer functionality.

The Cost of Digital Entertainment

When you buy a physical game, you own it forever. When you buy a digital game, you’re renting access that can disappear if servers shut down or publishers stop supporting the title. This isn’t new—it’s the reality of digital distribution—but it’s worth noting each time it happens.

For casual players, losing online services for a sports game from several years ago might not matter. For communities built around these games, it’s the end of something. They can’t maintain their own servers. They can’t keep playing together.

Why Publishers Shut Services Down

Server costs money. If a game isn’t generating revenue anymore, running infrastructure to support its online features becomes a business loss. Publishers prioritize resources toward new releases. The math is straightforward and leaves no room for sentiment.

Annual sports franchises like 2K’s basketball and wrestling games work on a yearly cycle. Each year’s version renders the previous version less valuable. Shutting down old servers accelerates the transition to the new game and reduces legacy support costs.

The Preservation Problem

Game preservation organizations have pushed for the right to maintain historical games long-term, but licensing and intellectual property law make it complicated. Without publisher cooperation, enthusiasts can’t legally keep old games alive. Each delisting is a piece of digital culture that becomes inaccessible.

Every digital service shutdown is a reminder: you don’t own your digital games. You own the right to use them until the publisher says no.
