Pokemon’s latest TCG expansion, Mega Evolution — Pitch Black, launched July 17 with one card already commanding close to $1,000 in the secondary market. The Mega Darkrai ex card, numbered 120/084, was trading at $996.69 on TCGplayer just days after release.

The card uses the set’s signature gold-foil treatment and classified as a Mega Hyper Rare. That rarity tier, combined with collector demand and limited pack openings so far, is driving the price spike.
What Collectors Are Seeing
Pitch Black centers on Dark– and Ghost-type Pokemon, with Mega Darkrai as the expansion’s headline creature. The set landed during peak collector season, when people are willing to crack expensive booster boxes hunting for chase cards. High demand plus low supply equals extreme pricing.
Experienced collectors temper expectations, though. Early secondary-market prices for fresh expansions are notoriously volatile. As more booster packs get opened and additional copies hit the market, the Darkrai card price will likely settle at a lower level—probably still high, but not $1,000.
The Bigger Picture
Pokemon TCG’s pricing environment has matured. Playable cards in competitive decks sell for reasonable amounts. Rare, collectible versions—especially full-art or special rarity cards—command premiums that reflect scarcity and collector enthusiasm. Darkrai’s gold-foil treatment taps into both worlds: competitive appeal and visual uniqueness.
When the first copy of a card is worth four figures within a week of release, the TCG market isn’t just about gameplay anymore. It’s about owning art that holds value.
