Reliance Jio showcased its expanding 4G and 5G network footprint across India’s Northeast at the North East India Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition 2026 held in Shillong, Meghalaya, on July 23, 2026. The company demonstrated its commitment to digital inclusion in regions historically underserved by telecommunications infrastructure.

Jio’s expansion in the Northeast represents a strategic move to extend high-speed mobile connectivity to areas where infrastructure development has lagged. The region includes some of India’s most challenging geography for network deployment.
5G Fixed Wireless Access Dominates
Reliance Jio strengthened its leadership in 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) with 9.11 million subscribers at the end of June 2026, accounting for approximately 70.5% of India’s total 12.94 million 5G FWA subscribers. FWA represents a critical application of 5G technology in India, providing broadband connectivity to homes without traditional fiber optic cables.
The Northeast’s geography makes traditional wired broadband deployment expensive. 5G FWA offers a cost-effective alternative for providing high-speed internet to rural and remote areas.
Subscriber Growth Leadership
Reliance Jio added the highest number of active wireless subscribers among Indian telecom operators in June 2026, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data. The company continues to gain market share from rivals Airtel and Vodafone Idea.
The company’s network expansion strategy focuses on underserved regions where competitor presence remains limited, allowing Jio to establish customer relationships before competitors deploy competing services.
Digital Inclusion Mission
Jio’s Northeast expansion reflects the company’s broader mission to bring digital connectivity to underserved India. The company views network expansion as both a commercial opportunity and a social responsibility to bridge India’s digital divide.
The infrastructure buildout supports India’s broader digital economy aspirations and enables rural areas to access e-commerce, digital banking, and online education platforms.
Reliance Jio’s Northeast expansion demonstrates how private telecom companies are extending high-speed connectivity to regions where government-led infrastructure initiatives have struggled.
