Riya Ahir seeks FIR withdrawal as Mumbai protest harassment complaint draws police attention

By Shahriar FahimAugust 22, 20262 Mins Read

Riya Ahir, whose image from a Mumbai student protest made her a widely recognised face of the demonstration, has asked authorities to move on two related issues: the withdrawal of a case linked to the protest and action over alleged online threats and abuse. The development brings the focus back to the legal and safety questions surrounding the viral moment rather than treating the incident only as a social-media trend.

The Times of India reported on August 19 that Ahir raised the request during a meeting between a Mumbai Youth Congress delegation and Joint Commissioner of Police for Law and Order Manoj Sharma. The delegation sought police intervention over threatening and abusive messages directed at Ahir and other young women associated with the protest.

According to the report, Sharma assured the delegation that the process for withdrawing the FIR would be initiated and that police would investigate people allegedly sending threats. The report also said Ahir told the group that she had approached police earlier but believed no concrete action had followed. Those are reported statements and assurances; they should not be treated as a completed withdrawal or as a finding against any accused person.

TV9 Marathi separately reported on the same date that a Youth Congress delegation complained to the police after Ahir said the threats increased following her meeting with Rahul Gandhi. That account also linked the renewed attention to the earlier protest in which she stood in front of a police vehicle carrying detained demonstrators. The allegation about increased threats remains Ahir’s account as reported by the outlet.

Ahir first became prominent after a rain-soaked July 22 demonstration at Shivaji Park in Dadar. A widely circulated photograph showed her standing in front of the police van. The Times of India said the image became one of the most prominent visuals from the Mumbai protests, while also reporting that another participant, identified as 19-year-old Muskan, faced similar online abuse and threats.

The latest development therefore has two separate tracks. One concerns the administrative and legal process for withdrawing protest-related cases. The other concerns whether police can identify and act on accounts accused of harassment, threats or abusive conduct. Until investigators or courts publish further findings, responsible coverage should keep allegations attributed, avoid repeating unverified posts and distinguish a request for action from an action already completed.
